LATEST IN THE BLOG
For most of my life, I’ve been lucky to go on a fairly major vacation for one week almost every year. Inevitably, that means I spend the other 51 weeks of each year anxiously anticipating said vacation. Last year, I went on the rock and metal cruise ShipRocked for the first time. The cruise was so awesome that I pre-booked for 2018 before even getting off the boat, and the excitement and impatience is multiplying exponentially with only two weeks left before we set sail again.
The thing about pre-booking a music cruise is that you don’t immediately know what bands you’re going to be sharing a boat with. Fortunately, the organizers always seem to do a solid job of putting together a nice balance of bands you friggen’ love and bands you’ve never heard of (but probably should). Since I have been lucky to see a surprising 17 out of 27 bands on this year’s lineup, I thought it’d be a good opportunity to feature some of those bands and my photos of them leading up to the cruise!
I’m starting this little ShipRocked series with the band DED, because I’m really, really, stoked to see them again. They were on some of the World’s Loudest Month festivals last year and I regret only getting to catch them once at Rock on the Range. I knew as soon as I got to the stage that these guys were FULL of energy.
The DED members are pretty immediately intriguing, just from the creepy white-out contacts they all wear. (Note to ShipRockers, this might be a good way for you to recognize them on board!) No one judges a book solely by its cover though!
At Rock on the Range, DED kicked off with their 2016 single “FMFY”. Even if you don’t know the words or acronym now, you’ll be singing along by the second verse. And then you’ll want to go immediately obtain a copy of Misanthrope, their first album that was released in July 2017.
DED mixes influences from Slipknot to Korn and Bring Me The Horizon. They own the nu-metal genre, and they’re exactly the kind of love, hate and passionate aggression I’ve been missing the last 15 years.
As for what to expect from a live show – energetic head banging, hair flips, crowd interaction, vocals ranging from hip-hop to heavy hitting metal. DED’s got something for everyone and are out to prove that this genre is actually rather alive and quite well!
DED is scheduled to play on day one of ShipRocked, January 21st, in the Victoria Lounge on Deck 5 at 11:30 PM and on January 24th on the Deck 9 Deck Stage at 12:30 PM. Be sure to catch one (or both!) of their sets or take a moment for a beach and greet with them at 11am while at port in Half Moon Cay!
